CU’s Leeds School of MBA Courses named one of the best in Colorado and the nation. The Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder is a local and national leader in preparing MBA students for social and environmental stewardship, according to the just released ranking by Beyond Grey Pinstripes.
Leeds ranks 21st among all participating national and international business schools according to Beyond Grey Pinstripes, the most watched ranking in the social and environmental business field. Conducted by the Aspen Institute Center for Business Education, the ranking measures the extent to which business schools equip students with an understanding of the social, environmental and economic perspectives required for business success in a competitive global economy.
According to the institute, top-ranked Beyond Grey Pinstripes schools are leading the way in providing students with skills that are becoming increasingly valuable to businesses’ bottom lines, including searching for innovative technologies and entrepreneurship opportunities around climate change, water scarcity, labor issues and poverty alleviation.
Leeds MBAs work with students across campus and some of the world’s leading experts and practitioners in the realm of social entrepreneurship. These collaborations help develop new learning models for higher education and industry and seek to give students and faculty alike the skills and mindset they need to tackle systemic problems and effect positive social change.
This year’s survey marked the first opportunity since the global economic downturn to comprehensively measure the extent to which MBA programs have altered the content of their courses, and whether faculty are pursuing research that questions assumptions about the role of business in society, according to Judy Samuelson, executive director of the Institute’s Business and Society Program.
“In the wake of the financial crisis, we’re seeing an increased willingness to address these issues,” Samuelson said. “That willingness is coming from a variety of factors, including student demand, faculty readiness and a desire on the part of business schools to clarify what exactly they’re doing to prepare business leaders to serve the needs of society, such as job creation and energy conservation.”
“Across Leeds’ core disciplines of accounting, finance, management and marketing, the school distinguishes itself by offering a large number of courses in which social and environmental issues are addressed,” said Donna Sockell, director of the Leeds School’s Center on Education in Social Responsibility. “Increasingly, students want more coursework in sustainability, and because of our long-term and school-wide commitment to this area, we are able to meet our students’ growing demand. This commitment has also resulted in a substantial body of top quality research across these core disciplines.”David Ikenberry, who took over as dean of the Leeds School last March, said Leeds’ national reputation in this area is part of what attracted him to the school.
“We appreciate the recent recognition extended by Beyond Grey Pinstripes and the Aspen Institute,” Ikenberry said. “Yet Leeds is not a newcomer to this emerging area in business education. Ten years ago, the University of Colorado Boulder took a bold move through the Leeds naming gift to incorporate these key ideas of how business affects society throughout its curriculum. Not only did we understand its importance then, but today we continue to leverage this to the benefit of mba and Colorado-based companies as we take Leeds to the next level of national prominence. This philosophy toward business education is part of who we are and makes us better at what we do and how we affect our world’s future leaders.”
The Leeds MBA program also demonstrates its commitment to sustainable business by hosting a number of internationally recognized competitions and events including the Conscious Capitalism Conference, Leeds Net Impact Case Competition, Clean Tech Innovation Challenge, Naturally Boulder conference and networking nights, Rocky Mountain Real Estate Challenge and the Sustainable Opportunities Summit.
The Beyond Grey Pinstripes report identified the top MBA programs by inviting MBA programs nationally and internationally to report on their coursework and research. The biennial Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey of the best green MBAs in the world has been published, and Stanford University is back on top. The survey ranks business schools based on how well MBA Courses incorporate social, environmental and ethical issues into the training of future business executives. “If the next generation of business leaders is to excel at managing enterprises for greater competitiveness, it will need the knowledge and skills to tackle not only the financial but also the social and environmental challenges faced by today’s corporations,” says the Aspen Institute, which conducts the survey. Stanford tops the list because of the large number of courses it offers with environmental and social content and the business role in global sustainability. Stanford was also cited for providing its faculty with opportunities for research in these areas. Stanford University had topped the rankings in 2005 and 2007, but fell to fourth place in 2009. The 2009 leader, the Schulich School of Business at York University in Canada, finished second in the 2011 survey.
The other top-five finishers in this year’s survey, which examined 149 schools in 29 countries, were IE Business School of Spain, Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business, and Yale School of Management. Other top finishers from the US included Northwestern, the University of Michigan, and Cornell. The Top MBA programs are “business schools working to integrate the social, environmental and economic realities of business into management teaching and research,” says the Aspen Institute. The programs “address the need for greater knowledge, skills and judgment around the role of business in society,” they add. In this year’s survey, the first since the global economic crisis began, Aspen notes sharp increases in course offerings addressing sustainability. Almost 80% of schools now require students to take courses on the role of business in society, and the number of classes on sustainability have increased dramatically (up from 69% in 2009).
While America is well-known to have some of the most prestigious business schools in the world, it might be worth your while to consider some of the overseas universities and business schools for your MBA Courses . The reason for this is that they can often offer a more rounded or global business school experience, and equip you to be a more effective player on the global stage.
One of the major drawbacks to studying your MBA abroad could well be the cost. While the cost of an MBA on American soil might seem high, it can be a lot higher if you are a foreign student in England, for example. This means that you could end up paying twice as much for your MBA as you would in the states, or up to four times as much as you would if you were a British citizen.
However, if you have any European ancestry it could be worth your while to investigate applying for a European passport or Ancestral Visa. This may give you access to the discounted tuition fees offered by some European universities, and could reduce the cost of your MBA to a fraction of what you would pay in the U.S. Some universities also offer financial incentives to foreign students in order to boost their diversity and international appeal, so keep a look out for these.
Where You Can Study ?
Here we will look at three of the most respected business schools outside of the states in Europe: Insead in France, the London Business School and IMD in Switzerland
INSEAD’s flagship MBA program
is currently ranked No. 1 globally by Business Week. Additionally, The Financial Times ranked it No. 4 in the world (tied with Stanford Graduate School of Business), and it has been the highest ranked one-year MBA program on the list for several years in a row.
The job prospects seem encouraging, with 86% of graduates from the school having found jobs within three months of graduation. Sandra Schwarzer, INSEAD’s director of career services said of this high percentage, “The school has an edge in the job market, because graduates are required to speak three languages, giving them a wide array of options in different countries during their job search.”
London Business School
is currently ranked No. 1 on the Financial Times “Global MBA rankings” for the third year running. The school is proud of the diversity of the student body, and the 2010 graduating class consisted of 320 students from 60 nations.
The ranking also draws out earning potential, with London Business School students earning a 132% increase in salary three years after graduating, compared to when they started their degree. The School reported an employment rate of 91% for MBA graduates within three months of graduating in 2010.
International Institute For Management Development
IMD is a business school that solely provides executive education. It is not part of a university, and there are no academic departments, just one integrated multidisciplinary faculty.
The school’s MBA program is a one-year program and the school deliberately keeps the number of participants small, admitting no more than 90 students. Each class includes participants from countries across the globe to ensure that no nationality dominates.
The program has been ranked No. 8 in the world by the “QS Global 200 Business School Reports,” and provides a truly unique learning opportunity.
The European Benefits
One of the major benefits of studying in Europe is an unparalleled internationalism in the student body, the faculty and the curriculum. This can make the European MBA an exciting cultural experience. If you have never spent much time outside of the U.S., the experience of living and studying abroad will be an invaluable one and you will be exposed to the way life and business work in a different part of the world. In order to be a truly effective international businessperson it is essential that you understand how corporate culture differs from one continent to another, and this is one of the best ways you can gain that experience first hand.
European MBA programs
are often shorter, and the students older and with more years of work experience. If the mantra is that you should learn as much from your cohort as your professors, then this can make many European schools highly appealing.
